HINULOGAN FALLS
Pilar is a coastal town located in the eastern most part of Capiz, hence, it is more commonly known for its beaches and fresh seafood. Little known to many are the waterfalls and magnificent caves that also add beauty to the area. One such waterfall is the HINULOGAN FALLS in Brgy. Tabunacan. It unfolds into a stream, which supplies water to the locals. Buck naked children swimming and jumping into the water are a common sight on the way to the falls. One can also see, for numerous times, the classic Filipino scene of ladies washing clothes by the riverbank. (Pity, my shots were too blurry due to car movement.)
Hinulogan Falls can be reached by two routes, one from the town of Pilar itself, where the way is full of zigzagging steep mountain terrains while the other is from Cabug-cabug, a baranggay in the neighboring town of Pres. Roxas. For our family trip, my dad chose the safer and tamer way in Cabug-cabug. A Tagalog friend of my brother was visiting and was the main reason for the trip so all the more reason for safety.
The mountain mollusk with its shell.
After about 30 minutes of car travel amidst sugar cane plantations, hills and mountains,we stopped over at the house of the Brgy. Captain Edgar Alfaro , who is a friend of my father's, to have lunch. We made calls beforehand so he knew we were coming . I was surprised to find quite a feast on the table. A platter of native violet rice is on the table together with Inubarang Native na Manok. I also tried a strange looking dish, which I first thought was chicken liver, later turned out to be a local delicacy of a mountain mollusk. Grilled catfish and Inasal na Manok were also in attendance, as well as the locally grown fuits like Papaya and Watermelon among others. Wow! That was real Capizeno hospitality!!! After being filled to the brim, we set out to go the falls. The Brgy. Captain and his beautiful daughter were our guides to the final leg of the journey.
The heavy December rains rendered the water murky but this didn't stop us from taking a dip.
As we drove on, we saw more of the stream that earlier seemed to hide from us behind trees- a sign that we were nearing our destination. Then, as if out of nowhere, we saw it! We finally arrived. The Hinulogan Falls is actually a triplet of waterfalls nestled between two mountains. I saw two wooden cottages ideal for family picnics. There was also a shower room so changing wasn't a problem. So, upon getting out of the car, my brothers, cousins, and I together with my equally daring aunt, stepped onto the slippery rocks to bathe in the cold waters of Hinulogan Falls. Hurray!
clear waters
Note: If you want to make arrangements prior to visiting the area, you can contact the very accomodating Brgy. Captain, thru the Capiz Provincial Tourism Office at The Capiz Provintial Capitol. Tel No.: 6210 040, loc. 221.
Best time to come is during summer, when the waters will be a welcome cool splash and very clear.
